Powells gets crafty

powells_notebook.jpg

Yet another reason to love Powells, these kick ass retro notebooks. The covers for these spiral bounds are old hardback library childrens’ books complete with check out slip and stamped dates on the inside cover. My favorite: Nancy Drew of course! I imagine myself filling those pages with all sorts of Drew-inspired notes. Heck maybe Ill even write my own mystery novel complete with a hapless sidekick.

shake about

“Ernest Hemingway once claimed he could write a great story in six words or less. He followed that braggadocio up by keeping his word. His story: For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”

The six-word story challenge is still alive and well today, only with a spin. Smith magazine (smithmag.net) posted a contest to find the best six-word memoir. How to best encapsulate your life in six words. Submissions range from the touching to the bizzarre. Some examples include:

Big Hair, big love, big hurry. ~ Larry Smith

Yes to every date, met mate. ~ Maria Headley

As for me, I submitted my own six-word memoir to the challenge.”Put whole self in and shook about.”

I think that about sums it up :-)

Perspective

A new year, a new perspective, a clean slate. I mourn the memories of last year, knowing like the many previous they will fade slowly into the texture of my past, interwoven and sporatic. In this period of reflection and mourning, I take a walk. The air at the waterfront is crisp and cold and I find it startling. I take fresh, deep breaths of it, imagining it filling all the newly emptied cavaties in my torso, soothing me. I watch the seagulls play leap frog along the railing, following me as I advance my steps. A fresh challenge lies ahead, and I am diving headfirst.
