I am expanding upon my normal weekend activties and trying out new sources of artistic and cultural absorbtion. Yes that was me in the back row at the one-man play on Hunter Thompson drinking a PBR, and waiting in line at 9:00 in the morning on a Saturday for the Seattle Art Museum grand re-opening ribbon cutting attempting to be the first free-loader to stand before an Andy Warhol and a Georgia O’Keefe. I am guilty of shamlessly promoting Cut & Paste to Dan Stiles at his art opening display of rock and roll posters; and sneaking in late to a modern dance performance. My partner in crime and I are explorers in this newly discovered cultural landscape. And its about time, I am now a quarter century wise.

I spotted this Frida Kahlo mural overlooking the crowded streets last Thursday on Alberta. While this Frida reproduction may have a bit more bemusement in her face than the original, even a slight “Mona Lisa” smile, I think Frida would approve given its context. Alberta street last thursday is a parade of the abnormal, a circus of the arts, a festival for the underground. Only in this parade you walk slowly past as the sidewalk entertainment delights. It is truly a celebration of all that is Portland. A Portland shelled of its Pearl District overcoat, exposed at its hippie, salt of the earth core. All the while Frida keeps a watchful eye on the colorful menagerie, I suspect these are her type of people.
