Cut & Paste

Occupying much of my free time and causing me to spend more hours than I had hoped typing vigorously on my laptop has been a little project I have taken on called Cut & Paste. This digital design tournament with plans for international domination has awarded me the title of Portland Team Lead and all the “glory” that accompanies (and few bucks on the side). Basically Cut and Paste is a designer showcase, 8 designers compete in 15 minute heats; their work is projected live onto huge screens, a DJ spins and an audience sips drinks. We are currently seeking the best Portland design talent to compete, and all interested can go to www.cutandpaste.com for more info and to enter.

If you go to cutandpaste.com you may be surprised by the fact that our small humble town of Portland “home to hipsters and hippies alike” is aligned with cities such as Tokyo, London, and Berlin. While we may not have the crumpled remains of a wall that symbolizes the fall of communism, or a Royal palace paced by toy soldier look-alikes, and our Max line may dwarf compared with the spiderweb complexity of Tokyo’s transit, Portland does has a deep pool of proud designers and artists. These like-minded artists may not work at the Pentagrams of the world, but their talent shines as brightly and this event is the opportunity to prove it.

Unlike other design events where artists gather to hear speeches, win awards, and talk to each other, this event speaks to an external audience. We are looking to draw a crowd of 800-1000 people, and while we fully expect designers to come out in full force, this is an event for the general public. It serves as a tool to educate and showcase what designers do and their talent, and to elevate the profession in the minds of the public. I am proud to bring this event to Portland, helping portray our neighborly city of roses as one of the great design centers on an international scale.
